the child runs around haphazardly. he might fall down and hurt himself. one way is to warn him of the fall, of how much it will hurt when he does. but when he finally does fall, encourage him. encourage him to get up, to get over it. and only then will he learn to be careful. to balance safety with joy.
but what tends to happen is he'll be hold on to tightly. too tightly. never being let go. never being let to run, to taste the breeze, to feel the ground. then he'll grow up, a child who never runs.
